Sleeper, a nationally noted antiquarian and collector, and one of the first professional interior designers in the United States, began building Beauport in 1907. The museum maintains and exhibits material relating to these major themes. In addition to its permanent collections, the museum offers a rotating schedule of special exhibits throughout the year. This self-guided tour along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport presents a unique opportunity to meet fifteen professional artists and see their work in the setting in which it was created. The work represented includes: pottery, painting, sculpture, photography, mosaics, and jewelry. Several of the artists will be demonstrating their working process during the tours. Visit the Essex Shipbuilding Museum to learn the story of how the determination and enterprise of a small village of New Englanders developed the American Fishing Schooner – a vessel that powered the fishing industry and changed maritime history. Maritime Gloucester (978) 281-0470 www.gloucestermaritimecenter.org 23 Harbor Loop, Gloucester Located on the waterfront overlooking the inner harbor, Maritime Gloucester celebrates the city's relationship with the sea with indoor and outdoor exhibits for visitors of all ages. The Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary Exhibit uses an interactive 3D model, touch screen computer stations, and video displays to describe marine life on the bank. Displays bring alive the local fishing fleet in the early 1900s. Exhibits include a marine railway model, vintage film footage of schooners competing in the International Fishermen' functioning foghorn, and s Race. Sea Shipbuilding in Essex began before 1668.
