Its interiors feature ornate woodcarvings, premier examples of Federalist-period furniture and an outstanding collection of family portraits by important early American artists. Unique works by John Singer Sargent, Mrs. Murray's great grandnephew, line the walls. Mrs. Murray led a tumultuous life fraught with writing successes and personal tragedies. A National Historic Landmark and an icon of the American fsheries, Schooner Adventure is a 122´ historic wooden dory-fshing schooner built in 1926 in neighboring Essex, Massachusetts. Adventure is a living monument to the famous Grand Bank Gloucester Fishing Schooners and the intrepid fshermen that sailed these vessels. Berthed at the Harriet Webster Pier at Maritime Gloucester, Schooner Adventure is at the center of Gloucester's efforts to preserve its maritime heritage and working waterfront.
