Experience Cape Ann 2016-2017 14 GLOUCESTER Gloucester — America's oldest seaport — is an authentic, vibrant and fun community. Gloucester has a rich maritime heritage of seafaring and fshing, a spectacular arts community, stunning harbor, unique restaurants and shops, and glorious white-sand beaches. Visitors can cruise on Gloucester's historic schooners and dine at the wonderful restaurants, featuring the freshest fsh and local fare. Enjoy the excitement of a whale watching excursion — did you know that Gloucester provides some of the best whale watching in the world? And of course, there's fshing, swimming, hiking, and spectacular scenery. The heart of Gloucester beats vibrantly downtown and in the working waterfront. Along Rogers Street you will see fshermen heading out to sea, fshing charters, and schooner ships offering both day and sunset cruises. Or maybe you will see one of the fshermen featured on National Geographic's "Wicked Tuna." Main Street is perched above the waterfront and crowded with eclectic boutiques, antique shops, galleries and wonderful restaurants. Enjoy a free self-guided HarborWalk tour throughout the area that will take you through 42 story posts that document Gloucester's history, arts, and current culture. Gloucester is also home to the country's oldest art colony on Rocky Neck, with dozens of art galleries. In fact, the Massachusetts Cultural Council has designated Gloucester with two distinct cultural districts: the Rocky Neck Cultural District and the Harbortown Cultural District. Visits to the newly-renovated Cape Ann Museum as well as the Beauport Sleeper-McCann House, Maritime Gloucester and the Sargent House are not to be missed. Gloucester is renowned for its vibrant live music scene and summer festivals, including St. Peter's Fiesta, Gloucester's downtown Sidewalk Bazaar and Block Parties, the Blues Festival and Waterfront Festival at Stage Fort Park, and the 32nd Annual Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend. ©MIchelle Budrow ©David Cox, City of Gloucester ©Brianna Cox Photography
