Sleeper, a nationally noted antiquarian and collector, and one of the first professional interior designers in the United States, began building Beauport in 1907. He eventually enlarged the house to over forty rooms filled with a lifetime collection that includes period furniture, glassware, books, ceramics, hooked rugs, and silhouettes arranged within various rooms, many decorated to evoke different historical and literary themes. (Open May 25 to October 19, 2013) Cape Ann Artisans (978) 281-3347 www.capeannartisans.com Cape Ann Artisans is celebrating their 30th anniversary with Studio Tours held on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23, and on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Columbus Day weekend, October 12 to 14, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. This self-guided tour along the scenic coastline of Gloucester and Rockport presents a unique opportunity to meet twenty-six professional artists and see their work in the setting in which it was created. The work represented includes: pottery, painting, sculpture, photography, mosaics, and jewelry. Several of the artists will be demonstrating their working process during the tours. We bring independently produced films to local audiences who might not otherwise discover them, and whenever we can, we'll bring the folks who made the films, too. The Museum maintains and exhibits material relating to these major themes. In addition to its permanent collections, the Museum offers a rotating schedule of special exhibits throughout the year. Guided tours are available. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. Closed on Mondays, major holidays and during the month of February. Box 1343, Gloucester Founded in 1952, the Cape Ann Symphony brings world class musicians and soloists to Boston's North Shore. Under the direction of Yoichi Udagawa, performances are held at the Manchester-Essex Regional High School Auditorium, located off of Route 128, Exit 15, on Lincoln Street in Manchester-by-theSea. Cogswell's Grant (978) 768-3632 www.historicnewengland.org 60 Spring Street, Essex Cogswell's Grant, established in 1636 and now a historic house museum, became the summer home of collectors Bertram and Nina Fletcher Little in 1937. The eighteenth century farmhouse displays their celebrated collection of American folk art, including primitive portraits, redware pottery, painted furniture, shaker boxes, hooked rugs, weathervanes and decoys. Everything is arranged exactly as the family lived with it. The property has been operated as a farm continuously for nearly four centuries and offers beautiful views of the marsh and Essex River. Walking tours in June and September highlight the 165-acre working farm. Owned and operated by Historic New England, the museum is open for tours June 1 through October 15, Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Essex Historical Society & Shipbuilding Museum (978) 768-7541 www.essexshipbuildingmuseum.org 66 Main Street, Essex Shipbuilding in Essex began before 1668. By 1937 more than 4,000 wooden vessels had been launched from the banks of the Essex River. Essex was recognized worldwide as North America's major producer of the American Fishing Schooner. Visit the Essex Shipbuilding Museum to learn the story of how the determination and enterprise of a small village of New Englanders developed the American Fishing Schooner – a vessel that powered the fishing industry and changed maritime history. The Essex Shipbuilding Museum is open mid-March through the end of December. Summer hours, Memorial Day Weekend to October 31: Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.
